Map | Minneapolis Institute of Arts

The Minneapolis Institute of Art map suffered from a complicated campus layout and an overwhelming number of exhibits. Funnel Incorporated took a 3-D approach to mapping the floors, highlighting key amenities and streamlining the color palette which has elicited rave reviews from the client. Map created by Information Designer Lin Wilson of Funnel Incorporated, an information design firm that makes the complex clear through the creation of infographics, icons, instructions, data visualization and maps. We work directly with corporate clients and/or creative directors and illustration art buyers at advertising, PR and interactive agencies. For more information, visit us at or call 608.828.0280.

Map for Minneapolis Institute of Art
Client: Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA)
Before/After Image: MIA's current flat overhead map (left) was not guiding visitors to galleries, parking, stairwells or bathrooms. Utilizing field observation and interviews (executives and volunteers), we crafted a map highlighting the 3-D relationships between floors and important stair/elevator connections (right).
Field Notes Image: An understanding of the overall campus for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts was lacking. Outdoor entrances, relationships to adjacent buildings and parking were hard to understand. Another major issue was which entrance to use and what constituted the “front door”. This view from the Northeast was chosen after multiple explorations of various vantage points.
